Jacob Snellgrove of Newnan graduated from Troy University during fall 2021 commencement ceremonies.

Snellgrove earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management, graduating cum laude.

Valdosta State announces graduates

Area residents were among members of the fall 2021 graduating class at Valdosta State University. They include:

Marching Southerners win top honor

Jacksonville State University's marching band, The Marching Southerners, has won the top prize in college bands.

The band was awarded the Sudler Trophy by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, and also has been invited to represent the U.S. in Normandy, France at the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June 2024.

Master Gardeners to award scholarships

The Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Scholarship Committee has announced that the MGEVs will be awarding $1,000 scholarships to students who wish to pursue or are pursuing a degree in horticulture, agriculture, environmental science or a related subject.

Applicants must be Coweta County residents, have at least a “B” average, complete the required application attached and provide supporting documents. Applications are available online at https://ugeorgia.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9Xn8NnQ8d7ILDbE .

Applications and required documents must be received no later than Friday, March 18.

Spier named winner in water essay contest

Piper Spier, a student at the Carolyn Barron Montessori School in Newnan, was recently recognized as one of 15 regional winners in the 20th Annual Metro Water District Essay Contest.

This year’s contest focused on the unique nature of the region’s water resources and the critical role of water industry professionals, and entrants were asked to write a 300-500 word essay that either highlighted an essential water career or illustrated why a clean, abundant water supply is essential for the region.

Shaunderya Matthews of Newnan recently graduated from Jacksonville State University with a Family and Consumer Sciences degree.

Sarah Woodle of Newnan, an exercise science and fitness major, has been named to the Dean’s List at Manchester University for the fall 2021 semester.
