Gothenburg High School conferred diplomas to 57 graduating seniors during the 2022 commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 8. Of this year’s graduating class, 29 of the students - 50% - plan to attend a four-year college or university this fall. There are also 19 graduates - 34% - who plan to enroll in a two-year college or technical program. All but nine of this year’s graduates will be furthering their education.
The class of 2022 has certainly lived up to their class motto - “Nothing Great is Achieved Without Risk” - at least on the academic stage. The class chose to be represented by black and gold as their colors, and the white rose as their flower.
During the Honors Night program on May 2, high school guidance counselor Jerry Wiggins remarked that in all the years he has been at Gothenburg Public Schools he has never seen as many students receive Regents and Chancellor's Scholarships as this class has. Applicants must have a minimum ACT composite of 30 and either a rank in the top 25% of their graduating class (6th or 7th semester) OR a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher to qualify for a Regents Scholarship. Chancellor's and Regents Scholarships are among the most prestigious awards granted by the university system and each pay tuition for full-time students and are renewable for up to 135 credit hours or completion of a bachelor's degree provided eligibility requirements are met.
Because of the renewability factor it is impossible to determine the exact dollar amount in scholarships received by this year’s senior class. But suffice it to say, these kids raked it in and represent Gothenburg Public Schools at the highest performing level.
